THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN BARRIE
- Hungry for some winter fun? Visit Barrie and try any of the
exciting outdoor activities offered. From ice fishing, skating
and maple syrup farms, to skiing, snowboarding, sleigh rides,
snowmobiling, snowshoeing, Barrie has it all.
- Take a step back in time when you visit Base Borden Military
Museum. See first-hand military World War I and II tanks, trucks
and other equipment. Or you can enjoy self-guided walking tours
of Barrie to see beautiful Victorian-style homes and landmarks.
(During the summer, guided tours are led by the official Town
Crier.)
- MacLaren Art Centre is home to The Spirit Catcher. Weighing in
at 20-tonnes, the piece was originally designed for the 1986
EXPO in Vancouver. It was eventually donated to the MacLaren Art
Centre in 1987, and now remains as part of the permanent
collection. Representing the Thunderbird, an Aboriginal myth, it
carries dreams and desires to the Creator.
DID YOU KNOW?
The city of Barrie was named after British Admiral Sir
Robert Barrie. During the War of 1812, British military troops
used the western shores of Kempenfelt Bay to rest and avoid
American forces in Detroit.
